Graduates EMERGING TALENTS

Fashion, as any other aspect in history, is cyclical. Everything goes back and forward until the old standards are replaced by new talents who steal the scene as a breath of fresh air. And this is exactly what happened at Fashion Space in every single way.

We began the new year 2019 with two hot designers that were newcomers to the industry; so new what you find on our online gallery is a selection of pieces from their graduate collections. Despina Chatzidakis, from London and Imanol Cruz, from Barcelona.

Despina’s “Off The Wall” collection is a juxtaposition of two radical opposites: the Elizabethan era and downtown New York in the 1980s. Extravagant silhouettes that drink from street styling tips showing the status, identity and rebellious vibe of both scenarios. Directly from their origin in the 80’s, graffitis are taken to Despina’s designs reinforcing  the exquisite craftsmanship of her creations. “One of my strengths is attention to detail, I’m a perfectionist and ensure [everything] is of a high-standard”, she tells us. The result is no other than an eclectic and eccentric collection where colour plays a vital role in order to transmit the vibrancy of her oversized, monumental pieces.

More of a psychological work is that of Imanol’s “DISMISS” collection. Always concerned with gender equality, his pieces seem to be a protective yet empowering garment for the woman -or man wearing them. “I loved the idea of a wide structure for the outerwear while keeping thing slim for the interiors.” Suits and masculine silhouettes -a clear reference to one of his icons in fashion history, Yves Saint Laurent- reflect this sense of power and leadership he wants to transmit with “DISMISS”.

Despite these two young designers may look too distant from each other in style, one can combine pieces from both collections into a unique outfit which can reflect their shared vision: the edginess of a look that rebels against the standard and makes you feel strong and stylish.

Santiago Carballo a new era..

Santiago Carballomscastro
BW019 revista.jpg

The arrival of Santi Carballo’s new BW019 collection, heralds the beginning of an exciting new era for the fashion label; an era of dynamic modernisation and redesign, creating, in its wake, a new image, and with it, a fabulous new line of glorious and uniquely handcrafted handbags.

Bags striped .jpg

But before we take a look at the new and improved brand and its inaugural BW019 collection, let’s take a journey into the past, to see how this accessories designer and master craftsman turned his passion into his trade, in an impressive career spanning 25 years.

Black and white bags .jpg

It was in 1998 that Santi Carballo first opened a workshop, combining his University studies with his passion for leather to create a unique brand and then a fashion boutique, which quickly earned a reputation for products done well, created by hand and with a sincere openness to design innovation.

Since the early days, the brand has gone from strength to strength, becoming known for the exclusivity of its creations of exceptional quality, craftsmanship, design and material, combinating originality and functionality in each new collection. Continued innovation, growth and learning has ensured this brand evolved with the trends.

But let’s get back to the latest collection, BW019. Speaking exclusively about his new collection, Santi Carballo explains that it is influenced by his passion for black and white – a concept which has always haunted the designer – and to him personally, represents the constant search for balance. The balance between design and craft, between contemporary fashion and traditional practices or aesthetics, between day and night, formal and informal and finally the quest for equilibrium between the strong and delicate.

And because each of the unique bags in this collection represent the balance of various moments and experiences, the collection itself is extremely flexible and versatile, perfect for both day and night, formal and casual, retro funky yet modern, dynamic and fun while at the same time elegant, timeless and classic. The fanny-pack for example is a perfect accessory for both daytime and evening or night wear, the handbag could be a fetish piece, while also exuding an air of elegance and sophistication, while the versatile backpack seamlessly transforms into a briefcase of a handbag.

Using an exterior of white leather with digital printing, and an interior of serrated suede, inspiration always comes first from the material itself and every other part of the collection from the dimensions, trimmings and finishes depends on it.

And although this new collection is not the first time that Carballo has used the black and white concept to capture the process of change, BW019 marks the beginning of a new stage in the modernisation of the brand.

There is so much to say about the magic ofPedro Palmas. We’re keeping it short here, and expanding in our printed catalogue, which will be out shortly. Suffice to say that for Wonderland we chose pieces from three of his recent collections: AURA, LA DOLCE VITA, and CHAMPAGNE ROSE. They all exude that specialWONDERLAND vibe that we were looking for to mark the end of the year.

Pedro´s forte has always been his versatility in dressing women of all age groups, making them feel dynamic and sexy at the same time. Asymmetric cuts are a signature; sometimes rather daringly, but always elegantly and functional. Pedro will never let you fall out of anything.

For the gallery, we mostly chose bridal and red carpet pieces, which is where Pedro's fastidious workmanship really shines through. But these pieces are not just meant for red carpet moments. Herein lies the Pedro Palmas magic. Pieces are designed so that you can mix and match to suit your every day wardrobe and lifestyle!

WHAT’S IN FOR BRIDAL 2019?

Bridal 2019mscastro
Cushnie

Cushnie

Although top bridal designers still go for classic styles such as ball gowns or 1950’s New Look silhouettes, some of them make fashion statements with proposals that vary from shapes to attitude and even colours! What all of them have in common is that the choice of the underwear to be worn in that special day has to be exquisite -not only for the night, girl, but also for the dress to feel even more unique.

Have you ever considered the idea of wearing trousers? Why not! Go for a wide leg option as many designers have shown in their collections, or even the cigarette silhouette if you feel more like it. Then many combinations are possible, but of course our favourite is the bra-as-a-top one, something similar to this Cushnie look.

Elie Saab

Elie Saab

Another popular style nowadays is that of the sexy bride: short length and deep neckline combo. Some options also include slits that show infinite legs, but maybe this is something for the riskiest ones! If you want to add a touch of sophistication to such a sultry look, try and get a short cape and, for the deep V-neck factor, do not forget a bralette as the triangle shape adjusts perfectly to the dress.

And last, but not least, the naked dress. Not that you are going to be Beyoncé at the MET Gala or Rihanna at the CFDA Awards, but some designers have shown their own (and more discreet) version of the trend, just showing some skin and letting the imagination flow. As some of the options we have seen go up to the waist, our advice is clear: go for high-waisted underwear as it will seem that the dress has it incorporated -also you won’t show any more skin than necessary.

Alessandro Enriquez - Fashionista y trotamundos

Alessandro Enriquez - Fashionista and world traveller

Having first come across Alessandro Enriquez in 2016 its a toss up of what was the first major attraction his bubly international fashionista personality or the colours or face of the ‘70s woman on one of the bags bejeweleld in Sputnik trinklettes.

Mini Amore - debut collection

Mini Amore - debut collection

Most probably both. Alessandro designer and  writer of '10x10 an Italian theory,  chose the detail and artisanal workmanship of the florentine manufacture Landi Accessories to produce his 2016 ‘Mini Amore’, debut collection.

Mini Amore - debut collection

Mini Amore - debut collection

This first  handbag collection was rich and full of Alessandro’s own personal experiences and memories, mixed with colours and shapes and influenced by a golden bracelet from the 50’s that his Grandmother gave him. The collection used a vivid colour palette, that has since  become a signature,  with lacquered red, yellow, turquoise, caramel, burnt orange and black;  the pieces  embellished with prints, embroidery, stitching and laser-work were just the tip of what was to become an ongoing  transalation of his personal style . Popular shapes such as  the tote bag, bucket bag,  the clutch and the oval bag shapes  are repeated in his subsequent collections  and enriched by stunning detail such as tone-on-tone and contrast piping as well as those fantastic chains and trinkettes.

Although Alessandro Enriquez shows seasonally  his collection are based more on stories he wishes to tell in this way with  Santa Enriquez /Harmonia Zoow24 he created a range that was inspired by the different charms or icons found in the cultures and religious traditions of various countries around the world like a kind of personal religion. Having always collected these charms on his travels, Enriquez decided to incorporate them into his designs, creating a look that merged fantasy and magic, with a feel of tradition.

Each of the bags style is now  named after a Greek Goddess  and includes  Bia, (Goddess of Strength)  Hebe, (Goddess of Youth and the signature half-moon bags), Pheme and Hera. The collection also features for the first time a selection of clutches called miracle. To emphasise the craftsmanship, the collection uses simple colours such as black, dark and powder blue, burgundy and emerald green. In keeping with his typical pop-art style prints, the collection features pop drawings of the Goddesses, along with detailing in embroidery, prints and stitching.

“ITALY SPAIN, ONE WAY” – comes next and tells the story of the brand’s protagonist SANTA ENRIQUEZ; a bull-fighter who falls in love with the bull turning him into a handsome prince. The story is told through bright colours, and of course his signature pop graphics and prints featuring stars, dots, comic messages and colourful lines.
